Scientology Volunteer Ministers -- Helping their Communities

I found this description of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers program at www.helpcommunity.org

Scientology Volunteer Ministers know how to help in times of crisis — be they in the form of personal, family, career, job, business, governmental or natural catastrophes. They are equipped with specialised knowledge and a wide range of skills that can alleviate and resolve many of the major sources of travail. (See "Volunteer Ministers — Compassion for Others")

These volunteers take seriously their responsibility for the condition of their communities. They are constantly vigilant, keeping a caring eye on those who might need a hand. When alerted — be it by a friend, a neighbour, their city, or their nation — they never hesitate to rise to the challenge and provide assistance.

In establishing the Volunteer Minister programme in the mid-1970s in a response to rising crime and violence in society, L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Scientology religion, provided society with tools for helping and practical solutions based on understanding and compassion — and he made them available for use by Scientologists and non-Scientologists alike.

Thus was born a broad-based movement of individuals from all walks of life dedicated to providing practical assistance to others in communities around the world. By applying fundamental Scientology techniques for helping, which anyone can use, Volunteer Ministers embody the truth that, when Scientology is used, conditions improve.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministry of Dorchester Working to Reduce Violence

The Church of Scientology Boston Massachusetts established a community outreach program in Dorchster called the Boston Scientology Volunteer Ministry

The Scientology News site published an article about their work:

"For more than a year, volunteers from the Church of Scientology of Boston have been manning a community center to provide effective help to the community.

"The Dorchester Scientology Volunteer Ministry, located at 628 Washington Street in Codman Square, provides free tutoring, courses and activities to reduce the crime and violence of the area by handling the factors that underlie these problems.

"In addition to individualized tutoring for children and adults, they offer reading and study skills courses and a human rights education program called Youth for Human Rights.

"Rev. Robert Castagna explained why he established the Dorchester Scientology Volunteer Ministry in the summer of 2004. 'We wanted to do something effective to help the community. Literacy affects so many aspects of life. The amount of crime in an area directly corresponds with literacy rates, so we decided to provide tutoring as our first activity.'

"The center is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:00 to 7:00 pm and Saturdays and by special appointment."
